He reveals a softer side when he says "I shall miss you", but immediately dismisses the feeling and says that she is a fool for wanting to see his softer side.Higgins is unwilling to change: Eliza tries to provoke him several times to make him show his true feelings, but he clings on to his ego tightly and refuses to succumb to his softer side.On the other hand, Freddy always treated her as an equal, even after realizing of her true background in fact, he would happily pick up her slippers if she ever wanted him to. And she was certainly not someone who would tolerate this, as she made clear in her outbursts. More importantly, he made it clear that he wasn't willing to change. She knew that Higgins was very egoistic and self-absorbed, and would keep her beneath him. Eliza would be left picking up Higgins' slippers for the rest of her life if she chose to marry him.She would always be a secondary person, amusing him in some way or helping him complete some tasks, but never his one and only true love. She would never be the prime interest in his life. Nor could she replace his mother as the most important woman in his life. Eliza could never compete with Higgins' love for philosophy and literature. Not many women would be interested in him, and even if they were, he wouldn't be interested in them! He looks down on everyone and isn't interested in romance, and makes this clear in the song "Let A Woman Into Your Life". In Pygmalion, he describes how he has already had several opportunities with women far more beautiful than Eliza, but he rejected them. But unlike Eliza, Higgins is already old and calls himself a "confirmed old bachelor" at the start. Higgins is not going anywhere: Though Eliza doesn't want to marry him, she does want him to remain in her life, and that would be extremely difficult if he eventually married someone else. She was already providing for herself at the beginning, selling her own flowers and paying her own rent, and she can learn to do so in a way that fits her new life and status. She's young and has an entire life ahead of her. Her father's not poor anymore, and can support her too. She has another upper-class gentleman waiting for her. Although some may cling to a person who is wealthier or of higher status to provide for them, Eliza does not need to. It isn't the end of the world if she doesn't marry Higgins. This is why she marries Freddy, summarizing Shaw's own arguments: In Pygmalion, she does maintains ties with Higgins and Colonel Pickering, but they cooperate to help her set up her life with Freddy. When Eliza comes back to Higgins' house, she has not returned to stay there and live with him forever. At the end of the play, Shaw writes that Eliza ends up with Freddy. My Fair Lady is based on the play Pygmalion (1913), written by George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950). So has Eliza come back to live with Higgins for good, or is just a one-time visit to say goodbye and end their relationship in a good way? Higgins is surprised and pleased by this.and that is where the movie ends. Eliza quietly comes to his house, overhearing this. But once he's at his house, he admits to himself that he's grown accustomed to her. She leaves, and Higgins is left to live without her. Higgins wants her back, but is too egoistic to admit it, and Eliza announces that she will marry Freddy and make a living by teaching others what he taught her. She finally ends up visiting Higgins' mother at her house, where Higgins also comes when he realizes she's missing. She sings "Show Me", telling Freddy to act on his emotions instead of talking about them. After a long fight, she quietly leaves his house, and while she's leaving she encounters Freddy (who is always waiting for her). Anyone who's watched My Fair Lady (1964) must've wondered who Eliza finally ends up with: is it her snobbish phonetics professor who looks down on everyone, or the young gentleman who is completely devoted to her but doesn't have a clue what he's going to do with his life?Įliza is hurt when Higgins treats her like an object he experimented on, and doesn't care about what will happen to her once the experiment is over.
